A novel form of synesthesia, swimming style-color synesthesia, has been discovered in two known grapheme-color synesthetes, who are semi-professional swimmers. The visual experience or imagination of four different swimming styles (breaststroke, butterfly, crawl, and backstroke) is synesthetically associated by them with four different colors (Nikolić et al., 2011). The induction of this kind of synesthesia took place exclusively under laboratory conditions and did not require any measurements in a swimming pool. All what subjects had to do was to take a look at photographs of other people swimming (e.g., Figure Figure1)1) or to think about/mentally visualize a given swimming style. This was sufficient to elicit their color experience.

Some musicians and composers have a form of synesthesia that allows them to "see" music as colors or shapes. This is called chromethesia. Mozart is said to have had this form of synesthesia. He said that the key of D major had a warm "orangey" sound to it, while B-flat minor was blackish. A major was a rainbow of colors to him. This may explain why he wrote some of his music using different colors for different music notes, and why much of his music is in major keys.
The colors has been constant and fixed since his earliest years, and they appear spontaneously. No effort or will or imagination can change them. They seem completely natural to him, and preordained. The colors ar highly specific. G minor, for example, i not just "yellow", but "ochre" or "gamboge". D minor is "like flint, graphite"; F minor is "earthly, ashy." He struggles to find the right word, as he would struggle to find the right paint or crayon. The colors of major and minor keys are always realted (for instance, G minor is a subdued yellow ochre, G majo bright yellow).

Watching another person being touched activates a similar neural circuit to actual touch and, for some people with ‘mirrortouch’ synesthesia, can produce a felt tactile sensation on their own body. In this study, we provide evidence for the existence of this type of synesthesia and show that it correlates with heightened empathic ability. This is consistent with the notion that we empathize with others through a process of simulation.
Imagine cold fingers creeping up someone’s calf. Now imagine that whenever you saw someone else being touched, you would feel the sensation on your own body. That is mirror-touch synesthesia.
Psychologists at UCL verified mirror-touch synesthesia and further showed its linked with heightened empathy in their report in Nature Neuroscience.Synesthesia–literally “joined sensation”– is a phenomena that involves one sense being detected through a different sense, or ideas concepts triggering automatic sensory experiences. Mirror touch synesthetes observing someone touched the left side of their cheek, perceive it as a touch on their own left cheek (anatomical), or on their right cheek (mirrored).
Its thought that this cross-talk between grapheme-processing and color processing areas exists because either:- Excessive connections made early in development are insufficiently pruned- There is an impairment to inhibitory systems that normally prevent cross-talk between the areas.Grapheme-color synesthesia is one of the most common of the 150 reported forms of synaesthesia and runs in families. It can be verified through batteries that test the consistency of color associations over time, or through a kind of reverse-colorblindness test where patterns jump out at synesthetes much faster than for the rest of us.
