I may begin to enjoy using the computer for its own sake as well. At this point the acitivty becomes autotelic, which is Greek for somthing that is an end in itselv. Some activities such as art, music and sports og usually autotelic. There are no reason for duing them execpt to feel the experience they provide. Most things in life are exotelic. We do them not because we enjoy them but in order to get at som later goal.
Ever since Freud, psychologists have been interested in explaining how early childhood trauma leads to adult psychic dysfunction. This line of causation is fairly easy to understnad. More difficult and more interesting is the opposite outcome: the instances when suffering give a person the encentive to becom a great artist, a wise statesman, og a scientist. If one assumes that external events must determinde psychci outcomes, the it makes sense tose the nurotic response to suffering as normal, and the constructive response as "defence" og "sublimation". But if one assumes that people have a choice in how theyd respond to external events, i what meaning they atribute to suffering, then one can interpret the constructive response as normal and the neurotic omne as a failure to rise to challenge, as a break down in the ability to flow.
Whatever one´s background, there are still many opportunities later on in life to draw meaning from the past. (...)At its best litterature contains ordered information about behavior, models of purpose, and examples of lives successfully patterned around meaningful goals. Many people confronted with the randomness og existence have drawn hope from the knowledge the others before them hade faced semilar problems, and had been able to prevail. And this i just litterature; what about music, art, philosophy and religion?s
